ASU soccer got back in the win column Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast with Jemma Purfield and Angela Boyle scoring the deciding goals.

ASU soccer have been competitive in every match this season with the margins of either victory or defeat being one goal.

The one-goal margin streak continued for the Sun Devils Sunday, but this time ASU was on the right side of the scoreline.

For the third straight match and fifth time this season, the Sun Devils played to a 2-1 game with this time Arizona State prevailing over Florida Gulf Coast.

Arizona State was looking to bounce back after a tough loss versus Texas Tech Friday, and the first half wasn’t their strongest performance with the Eagles sporting the most effective attack.

After being outshot 5-3 in the second half, the Sun Devils came out as the aggressor in the second half outshooting FGCU 9-3 in the final 45 minutes.

Their aggressiveness was rewarded in the 56th minute as the Sun Devils scored the breakthrough goal on winger Jemma Purfield’s second goal of the season.

Purfield was fed a perfect long ball from midfielder Amanda Jones over the top of the Eagles defense with Purfield finishing the chance past FGCU goalkeeper Melissa Weck.

Eight minutes later, Arizona State doubled their lead to two goals as defender Angela Boyle’s shot from defender Devyn Kelsey’s corner kick service deflected into the back of the net for ASU’s first two-goal lead of the season.

After conceding in the 88th minute versus Texas Tech Friday, ASU was looking to avoid conceding goals in the final minutes of the match.

Florida Gulf Coast made it interesting scoring a goal in the 74th minute as Cassidy Morgan headed in a corner kick near post to make it 2-1 Sun Devils.

Arizona State was able to hold on and secure their second win of the season versus a talented Eagles side.
