ASU football lost another player Monday as Notre Dame announced wide receiver Cameron Smith was joining the Irish on a graduate transfer.

ASU football lost their third player in the last two weeks Monday as wide receiver Cameron Smith is joining Notre Dame on a grad transfer.

Smith joins defensive backs Armand Perry and Kareem Orr to leave the football program in recent weeks.

After missing all of the 2015 season with an injury, Smith played in eight games last season finishing with only 11 receptions and 183 receiving yards.

More from Devils in Detail

Smith never really broke out with the Sun Devils as 2014 was his best season catching 41 passes for 596 yards and six touchdowns.

In his career with Arizona State, he finished with 60 catches, 908 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

On paper, this doesn’t appear to be a huge loss for Arizona State, but the Sun Devils will lose his experience and leadership on and off the field.

Arizona State has the depth at wide receiver to fill the void in N’Keal Harry, Jalen Harvey, Ryan Newsome, Kyle Williams and John Humphrey.

The Sun Devils wide receiver core will be young as wide receiver Ryan Jenkins (redshirt senior) and Harvey (redshirt junior) and the two most experienced players in the room.

This group of wide receivers have the potential to be extremely productive no matter who’s starting under center as Harry is poised to have a breakout season after tallying 58 receptions, 659 yards and five touchdowns.

Smith’s departure opens the door for a player to step up and the battle for the No. 3 wide receiver on the depth chart will be worth watching as the season approaches.
