ASU Football: Defensive Back Armand Perry Medically Retires
By Sam Ficarro
In a surprise Twitter announcement, ASU football defensive back Armand Perry has retired citing medical reasons after sustaining torn labrums last season.
ASU football safety Armand Perry broke surprising news on Twitter Wednesday announcing he’s medically retiring from football.
In a long Twitter post, Perry said he sustained turf toe and torn labrums in his shoulder and hip and after talking it over with family, doctors and coaches, Perry decided to retire from football.
Perry has battled injuries in each of the last two seasons after starting every game his freshman season.
During the 2014 season, Perry was one of Arizona State’s most promising defensive backs recording 34 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss including a game-clinching interception return for a touchdown versus Washington.

After playing 13 games in 2014, the last two seasons Perry had struggled to stay on the field combining to play only 12 games.
During the 2015 season, Perry started two games before sustaining a season-ending injury and being placed with a medical redshirt.
Last season, Perry played 10 games recording 59 tackles and seven TFLs while battling multiple injuries.
This is a big blow for Arizona State’s secondary, which has been one of the poorest in the nation the last couple of seasons.
Perry was going to be one of the starting defensive backs and now Arizona State will look to others such as defensive backs Kareem Orr and Maurice Chandler with the departure potentially opening the door for the likes of Chase Lucas and Perry’s brother, Alex, to step up.

Fortunately for the Sun Devils, head coach Todd Graham and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will have a lot of time to find the player to fill Perry’s void before the season opener August 31 versus New Mexico State.
