ASU Softball: Bruins Score 13 Runs in 10-Run Victory

After losing 4-3 Thursday, ASU softball was hammered for 13 runs on 18 hits as No. 10 UCLA won 13-3 to clinch the series victory.

ASU softball, after playing a competitive game versus the 10th-ranked Bruins Thursday, struggled to hold UCLA’s powerful offense at bay Friday.

UCLA defeated Arizona State 13-3 behind 18 hits from seven different players, including a five-hit performance from shortstop and lead-off hitter Delaney Spaulding.

Spaulding couldn’t get out batting 5-of-5 with three singles, double and three-run home run finishing the afternoon with three RBIs and five runs scored.

Bruins third baseman Brianna Tautalafua led the team with five RBIs hitting a two-run single in the third inning and a three-run home run in the seventh inning.

Arizona State sent Dale Ryndak to the circle and struggled pitching four innings allowing six earned runs on 10 hits.

Freshman Alyssa Loza pitched for the second straight game in relief pitching the final three innings allowing seven runs (two earned) on eight hits.

Arizona State has been known for hurting opponents this season with the long ball, but Friday UCLA had a power display of their own smashing three home runs.

Spaulding’s three-run home run cracked the game open giving UCLA a 6-1 fourth inning lead.

UCLA scored runs in every inning but the second inning finishing the game with a run in the fifth inning, two in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Arizona State was able to muster some offense finishing with three runs on seven hits.

Right fielder Fa Leilua finished with two RBIs on a solo home run in the third inning and an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Arizona State also scored another run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by first baseman Margaret Stahm.

UCLA used a pair of pitchers Friday and both were highly effective in the circle.

Selina Ta’amilo got the start pitching 2.2 innings allowing one earned run on two hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Johanna Grauer relieved Ta’amilo and finished the game with two earned runs on five hits along with two walks and three strikeouts.

Ta’amilo secured the win improving to 14-0 this season.
