ASU softball dropped the first game of a three-game series Friday as Arizona overcame a 3-2 deficit to defeat the Sun Devils 4-3.

ASU softball looked to do what they did last weekend versus No. 10 Utah: win the first game of the series.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Sun Devils couldn’t hold on to a 3-2 lead as the Wildcats secured a run in the third and fifth innings to squeak out a 4-3 win.

Arizona State took the lead in the top half of the third inning on an RBI single by shortstop Chelsea Gonzales.

In the home-half of the inning, Arizona would tie the game on an RBI single by first baseman Jessie Harper.

The Wildcats then took the lead for good in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Harper.

Arizona State got to the Wildcats’ star ace pitcher Danielle O’Toole early as Arizona State got 2 runs in the second inning and 1 run in the third inning.

After the third inning, O’Toole settled into the game sitting down six straight batters and not allowing a hit for the remainder of the game.

The only thing ASU was able to produce was a pair of walks by by catcher Sashel Palacios and first baseman Margaret Stahm.

O’Toole finished the game throwing a complete game allowing 3 runs (2 earned ) on 4 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Getting the start for Arizona State was pitcher Breanna Macha throwing a six-inning complete game allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits to go along with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Macha was a bit shaky to begin the game allowing 2 runs in the first inning, but settled down to allow only a run in the third and fifth inning.

Unfortunately, Macha didn’t get enough run support as the Sun Devil bats were silenced after the third inning.
