Despite currently sitting at 13-18 and 2-10 in conference play, the ASU baseball team‘s season isn’t lost quite yet.

Despite head coach Tracy Smith saying that the team, “gave up,” against California last weekend, the Sun Devils jumped out to an early lead this past Tuesday over UNLV and never looked back. That type of play going forward could make things interesting for ASU baseball.

With six in-conference series remaining before the postseason, Arizona State needs to finish strong to even have a chance at making the postseason. Luckily for the Sun Devils they play in the Pac-12, one of the hardest baseball conferences in the country, so a strong finish in a hard conference may allow them to sneak into the postseason.

Even if ASU doesn’t make it to the postseason, a strong finish would give this program a lot to look forward to in the future. With a very young team it isn’t a surprise that they have struggled to find their footing so far, they just needs to hope that the win over UNLV helped them find it.

This upcoming weekend the Sun Devils will be up against Washington State, a team that has been struggling just as much as ASU. A series sweep against the Cougars could really jump-start this team and give them the confidence to finish out the season strong.

How this season ends may also have an effect on who is managing the team next season. While there haven’t been any rumors of Athletic Director Ray Anderson thinking about making a change, the poor start to this season has made fans question whether Smith is the right guy for the job.

With a young core, only a few players set to leave after the season, and a program that always does a good job recruiting, there is a lot to be excited for in the future. Now it is time to see whether the future will arrive in the coming weeks, or if we will have to wait until February of 2018.
