The ASU football team has begun their spring practice schedule. The team will practice up until April 15 when the Sun Devils will have their spring football game.

For ASU football, this is a very important time of year. This will be the first chance incoming offensive coordinator Billy Napier and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will have a chance to get a good look at what they have to work with. This will also give them a chance to start and implement their specific schemes for the upcoming season.

With a lot of turnover this past offseason, it is especially important that Napier and Bennett make sure that they set a tone for the upcoming season. If Napier wants a pass-heavy offense, he needs to make sure they spend a lot of time on that during spring practices. Bennett may want to move away from a blitz-heavy defense, he will need to have the secondary drop back into coverage over and over again so that it is ingrained in their minds.

Something to remember is that this is a process. Mistakes will be made and this is the time where that is okay. Having the time to explain things in detail is one of the advantages of spring practices.

More from Devils in Detail

On April 15, fans will get a glimpse of what the Sun Devils can do. Questions will be swirling in everyone’s mind. The part that also makes it frustrating is that this won’t feature the incoming freshman class, but it will feature the No. 1 transfer quarterback, Blake Barnett.

These spring practices are even more important for the quarterback position. There are two highly skilled quarterbacks in Manny Wilkins and Barnett who both believe they have what it takes to be the starting quarterback this team needs for the upcoming season. While he is currently still rehabbing from injury, Brady White also will make a run at the starting quarterback position once he is healthy.

There are a lot of questions for the ASU football program, but unfortunately for fans, they most likely won’t answer most of them during spring practices. It will be up to the fans to try to draw as many conclusions as they can when the spring game happens on April 15 at Sun Devil Stadium.
