The ASU baseball team looks to take the rubber match of a three-game series against number one, TCU after dropping the second game of the series Saturday night 8-4. The Devils will send Spencer Van Scoyoc to the mound as they look to win the weekend series.

Van Scoyoc, the freshman pitcher for ASU baseball, will have attempt number two at starting in his young career as his last one was cut short due to rain early on against Northwestern last weekend. Van Scoyoc went just 2.1 IP with three strikeouts and three walks allowed. He’ll do his best against the hot hitting Horned Frogs who have scored 17 runs already this weekend.

Freshman Lyle Lin has stayed hot this weekend as he’s 5-11 so far with three RBI’s. Lin was solid behind the plate on Saturday as he threw out a baserunner at second before moving to first base to finish up the game.

The seemingly odd man out early in the pre-season Tyler Williams has taken advantage of his opportunity at game time this weekend. Williams hit the first home run of the Sun Devils season on Friday in the victory and added another RBI to his tally on Saturday with a sacrifice fly, bringing his total to four on the young season.

More from Devils in Detail

Junior Andrew Shaps returned to the lineup for the Devils in yesterday’s loss. It was his first game of the season as he returned from an unspecified suspension. Shaps went 2-3 with two walks and two runs scored. With Shaps back in the lineup, it gives the Devils more options in the outfield as Shaps took over centerfield with Gage Canning moving to right field on Saturday. That leaves Hunter Bishop, Myles Denson, and Williams in the fray to fill in when needed.

TCU will send sophomore Jared Janczak to the mound for the finale, Janczak was 7-4 last season with a 2.61 ERA on his way to earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Janczak was the Horned Frogs Opening Day starter and he pitched six innings allowing just two earned runs on two hits with six strikeouts.

The speedy TCU team continued to be a nuisance on the basepaths and they stole four bases on Saturday that added to their lead in the Big 12 giving them 17 on the season with Austen Wade leading the team with four.
