ASU Basketball: No. 23 Arizona State Falls to No. 10 Washington

ASU basketball lost their second game of the season against the University of Washington 70-57 on Sunday night.

The loss broke No. 23 ASU basketball’s two game win-streak and brought their record down to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in conference play. Meanwhile, No. 10 Washington improved to 24-3 and 12-2; they remain in first place in the Pac-12.

The national scoring leader, Washington’s Kelsey Plum, had 29 points while her teammate Chantel Osahor had 18 points and 18 rebounds. For Arizona State, Sophie Bruner led with 16 points and Reili Richardson added 13.

Despite the loss, the Sun Devils held the national leader in made-threes to just 3 of 14 from the three point line. This forced the Huskies to make most of their shots from inside the line. For the first time this season, Plum failed to make a three.

Not only did they limit their opponent from the three-point line, Arizona State also outscored them from behind the arc. The Devils made 6 of 19 three-pointers.

ASU’s field goal percentage was only 37.7 percent compared to Washington’s 50 percent.

The Sun Devils stayed within 3 of the Huskies in the first quarter, but going into halftime they were down by 13.

They matched Washington’s scoring in both the third and fourth quarters. However, they couldn’t overcome that 13 point deficit.

ASU had a hard time with senior Quinn Dornstauder’s limited playing time. Dornstauder got into foul trouble early in the game causing her to only play 14 minutes. She earned her fourth foul halfway through the third quarter.

The Sun Devils have continued to struggle against ranked opponents this season. They’ve only won three of 10 games against ranked opponents.

Arizona State will go on to face their rival, the University of Arizona, on Friday February 17 and then again on Sunday February 19.

Arizona is currently in last place in the Pac-12 with a conference 3-11 record, 12-13 overall.
