Even though the 2016 season may be over, it is never too early to look ahead to all the excitement that the 2017 season will bring for ASU football.

The 2017 season will bring a whole new wave of excitement to the ASU football program. While there will be questions that demand to be answered, positivity will surround the Sun Devils. With all those positive emotions, some people will fail to take a step back and look at the program through a more objective lens. Here at Devils in Detail, we believe there is no better time to do that then right after the previous season has come to a close. Here is part one of our 2017 season outlook.

The first question that will need to be answered, and will have to be answered, is the defense. A third straight season of having one of the worst defenses in the country will likely cost head coach Todd Graham his job. The defense has been atrocious, and while it is likely that some sort of change will be made to the defense this offseason, we will have to wait and see if they can get back to where they were back in 2013.

Another big issue that will need attention is the quarterback position. There could potentially be six quarterbacks all vying for the starting job, and with the influx of talent the 2017 recruiting class is bringing in there is no reason why Manny Wilkins should get the starting job without question. A battle for that position needs to take place, that will give this team the defined leader the team was lacking this past season because of injury.

The 2017 season will be one that could change the course of ASU football. If the season is a success, then Graham keeps his job and the team stays intact another season. If it doesn’t go as expected, then the Todd Graham era could be over and it will leave the program searching for a whole new identity.
