After a stressful season came to an end on Saturday with a win over their rivals, the University of Arizona, the ASU volleyball program announced that head coach Stevie Mussie was no longer with the program.

The news broke Sunday evening with a statement from Ray Anderson being released on thesundevils.com, Arizona State’s athletics website.

“Sun Devil Volleyball Coach Stevie Mussie is no longer with the program,” the statement read, “We will launch a national search immediately for her successor.  Sanja Tomasevic will act as interim head indoor volleyball coach with Brad Keenan continuing to serve as head beach volleyball coach.”

This announcement hit the program as they were at their highest, finishing off the season on a three game winning streak.

While the reason for Mussie’s departure is still unknown, Mussie herself hasn’t issued a statement.

In Mussie’s single season at ASU she took over a volleyball program who had lost one of their best all-time players in Macey Gardner, and was looking for a new identity after the departure of five seniors.

Mussie led ASU volleyball to a 7-5 non-conference record and a 5-15 conference record. The self proclaimed “Road Warriors” didn’t play a single match at Wells Fargo Arena until September 30, 35 days after the season began.

Mussie’s young age, 31, led to the thought that she could and would be ASU’s volleyball coach for many seasons to come.

The Sun Devils will now begin their search for their third head coach in three years, and the hope is that they can find one that will be with the team long-term.
