ASU WBB: ASU Bounces Back Against St. John’s

Arizona State bounced back from Friday’s loss with a 54-41 win versus St. John’s. The Sun Devils opened up strong against St. John’s, taking the lead early in the first quarter. Quinn Dornstauder stepped up to make some crucial layups to help the Devils maintain their lead.

Dornstauder dominated on the court helping to put points on the board and create chances alongside Sophie Brunner, who has been a greater impact for the team this game compared to yesterday.

St. Johns was able to keep the game close in the first quarter, as Arizona State led the Red Storm 14-12.

Kelsey Moos lead the second quarter showing off her aggressive style of play that had appeared absent in the previous game. Numerous offensive and defensive rebounds from Moos helped give the squad opportunities to produce points on the board.

Finishing off the half, Brunner reached 1,000 career points as a Sun Devil and led the team in points alongside Dornstauder with eight in the half. The Devils held off St. Johns from scoring double digits in the second quarter and led 30-19 at halftime.

Kiara Russell opened it up in the third quarter making a layup to add to the Devils’ lead. Dornstauder came in clutch with defensive rebounds and providing excellent defense for the Devils to counter St. John’s offensive pressure.

Finishing up in the fourth quarter, the Sun Devils played aggressively and were able to sink their shots, a huge change from the team we saw against Maryland and Marquette.

The squad averaged 48 percent on their field goals and 66 percent on free throws. ASU was able to make changes this game and finally started sinking their shots.

Brunner finished with 15 points, Dornstauder with 12, and Reili Richardson with seven to lead the Devils in points for the game.

The team also finished with 31 rebounds and were able to force 17 turnovers from St. John’s, of which they were able to convert 19 points from.

While this win was crucial for the squad, they are not out of their rough patch yet. If the Sun Devils want to be able to succeed this season they have to relax and try not to force their plays, or they will continue to give away balls to the opposing team.

The freshmen on the squad have truly been impressive on the court. Richardson had a great game and was able to press and make a lot of things happen for the Devils offensively.

If the team continues to be the strong rebounding team that they are, this will definitely help them to have the upper hand against other teams and could make a huge difference as they enter into conference play in the coming weeks.

ASU will head back to Tempe to face off against Boston University next Saturday, in hopes of continuing with a winning streak to make up for their two losses they’ve experienced early in their season.
