The road to return has been a long one for Shannon Evans II, a junior guard out of Suffolk, VA.

Between a long transfer process and an academic redshirt, Evans had spent a long time away from the game, 602 days to be exact. The former University at Buffalo guard made the difficult decision to follow Head Coach Bobby Hurley to ASU in April of 2015 and is finally getting a chance to prove himself in the 2016-2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball season.

In his sophomore year playing at the University at Buffalo, Evans solidified himself as a bonafide scorer and playmaker, averaging 15.4 points per contest along with 4.6 assists. His fantastic athletic ability matched with his keen outside scoring and incredible motor made him a fantastic addition to the team. His on-court ability is matched by his positive and upbeat attitude about the future of the Sun Devils.

A day prior to the first game of the season, Evans held a big grin on his face.

“It’s a lot of excitement… I’m trying to be calm, play my game, and (I’m) trying to get a win,” Evans said.

The kind of positivity brought about by Evans is much needed following a disappointing 15-16 season for the Sun Devils. In a locker room full of fresh faces and new talent, having someone with his skill and light-heartedness is very important.

“I’m really excited to see my parents. I have some friends coming as well. Just being back on the floor, i’m just trying to get a win at the end of the day.… It’s been real long, I know it’s going to be fun,” Evans said prior to their matchup against Portland State.

His open-mind and drive for victory boded well for the Sun Devils, who defeated Portland State 88-70 in their first game of the regular season. Evans poured in 19 points on 44% shooting along with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. His teammates Tra Holder and Torian Graham scored 23 a piece and helped lead the way to the first home win of the season. There is no doubt that Evans made his loved ones proud in his Sun Devil debut, and his is sure to make them proud in the games to come.
