After an embarrassing loss to Oregon, the Arizona State football team seems to be on a complete free fall with with a 5-7 finish becoming more and more likely. With two tough opponents coming up in Utah and Washington, will ASU get that elusive sixth win?

Before the game against Oregon, fans were confident in the Sun Devils’ abilities to win another game before the season’s end. But after a loss to Oregon that not only featured another horrible display by the secondary, but an offense that had a difficult time sustaining drives despite scoring 35 points. The showing against Oregon could arguably be considered their worst performance of the season and it only gets harder from here.

The Sun Devils won’t play a game this weekend due to a bye week, but after that they face a Utah team that has been a thorn in the side of ASU for the past few seasons. With a defense that refuses to break and an offense that plays smash-mouth football, Utah will be a tough test for the Devils and anything less than a perfectly executed gameplan could result in their fourth straight loss.

More from Devils in Detail

The Sun Devils will then have to travel to the University of Washington, a team that has no intention of slowing down and seems to just now be playing their best football despite a perfect 8-0 record. The Sun Devils will have their work cut out for them as they will look to pull off the upset and ruin the Huskies’ playoff chances.

To end the season, the Sun Devils will travel to Tucson in what could be a rivalry game with even more on the line than just the territorial cup. If the Devils come into that game 5-6 then they will have to come out victorious to become bowl eligible. The Wildcats haven’t had much better of a season as they currently sit as the only team in the Pac-12 without an in-conference win. Both teams will be looking to win that game but ASU might be in a must-win situation which could add even more drama to an already historically dramatic game.

Become bowl eligible is a benchmark in college football. If your team can at least get to a bowl game then the season wasn’t a complete failure. For ASU, a season that started out with a 4-0 record may end with a disappointing 5-7 finish. While there are still three games left for the Sun Devils, fans are getting ever closer to hitting the panic button.
