ASU Volleyball: The Sun Devils fall to the UCLA Bears

Now 0-6 in the conference season, the Arizona State women’s volleyball team fell again, losing to the 3-2 UCLA Bears.

The Sun Devils had a close first set against the Bears with a final match score of 23-25. Junior middle blocker, Oluoma Okaro, senior outside hitter Cassidy Pickrell, and sophomore outside hitter Lexi Maclean were some of the team’s strongest players during the match. These girls made up a majority of the team’s kills with 8, 7, and 5 respectively..

Maclean, led the team in attacking with a total of 22. Okaro and Pickrell were right underneath her with totals of 21 and 20.

The Sun Devils hit a rough patch during the second set with the match score ending at 12-25. Sophomore middle blocker, Jasmine Koonts and sophomore setter, Kylie Pickrell, had good communication on the court. Pickrell fed Koonts on two separate points, which allowed Koonts to gain two kills during the second set.

Both Okaro and Koonts had two kills during the second match with Koonts holding the highest hitting percentage with .188. She was followed by Maclean and Maya McClendon with an average of .182.

ASU had a close third set against the Bears with a final match score of 22-25. Okaro managed to keep the score tight with a kill against Taylor Formico, but the Sun Devils fell short with the final kill coming from UCLA’s Torrey Van Winden.

Errors are still an issue for the Sun Devils. The women’s volleyball team averaged five errors in the first set, 11 in the second, and nine in the third. The UCLA bears kept their errors low maintaining a low score of nine in the first set, two in the second, and three in the third.

Over all, the Sun Devils had a total hitting percentage of .142, which was under UCLA’s with a percentage of .333.

The Arizona State Sun Devils will take on California next week in Berkeley, California.
