ASU Football: Camp T Doesn’t go as Planned
After ASU Football fans waited months on end for the annual event that marks the beginning to a new football season, Camp Tontozona, weather wreaked havoc on the four-day event causing cancellations and shortened practices.
Mother Nature always seems to remind us of all she can do at the worst times, this past week being a perfect example.
An event that was supposed to bring joy to many Sun Devil football fans’ lives ended up being a messy ordeal thanks to Mother Nature.
The four-day event was welcomed by a downpour Tuesday night into Wednesday that caused Coach Todd Graham and company to move their practice location away from Camp Tontozona. They ended up practicing in Rumsey Park in Payson, Arizona and had a shortened practice because of the weather conditions.
Thursday’s practice was held at Camp Tontozona after some maintenance was done on the practice field to make sure it was suitable enough for use.
The rain that was forecasted for the day held off until the afternoon so ASU was able to get a full practice in, and they utilized every second of it.

Before Camp Tontozona started, new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey said that he was planning on giving all the quarterbacks a chance at first team reps so that they all got a fair opportunity to state their case for the starting quarterback position. Thursday’s practice featured Bryce Perkins and Manny Wilkins getting first team reps. Let the quarterback competition begin!
The rain that was forecasted did show up in the afternoon, and it was another storm that made Friday’s practice take place at Rumsey Park instead of Camp Tontozona. And once again, the practice was shortened due to lightning.
Friday’s practice saw Brady White joining both Perkins and Wilkins in first-team reps. While Dillon Sterling-Cole will also get some first-team reps, look for White, Perkins and Wilkins being your three quarterbacks fighting it out for the starting quarterback job.
On Friday night the worst news to hear as a fan that has traveled to see a teams practice was announced, Saturday’s practice had been canceled. Not only was this bad news simply because fans had traveled to watch the team, the Saturday practice has traditionally been the practice where there is a scrimmage and it begins to feel like football season again.
With Saturday’s practice being cancelled, the Sun Devils traveled back to Tempe and began their closed practices that will take them to the beginning on the season.
Simply put, Camp Tontozona was a disappointment this year. Hopefully the season ahead will make this seem like a distant memory.
