After huge news of three local commits dropped on Friday, ASU Football continued where it left off by gaining another commit from the class of 2017 on Monday.

The commit is Trelon Smith out of Cypress Ridge High School in Houston, Texas. Smith is a 5-foot-9, 181 pound running back who has the quickness to become a dangerous back in college.

Smith received high praise from his high school coach, Gary Thiebaud, when he talked to Arizona Republic reporter Doug Haller.

“He’s a competitor, he hates to lose. He can score from anywhere on the field. He has the ability and the vision to make jump cuts, find the hole and get up field. And then he has the ability to run through tackles,” Thiebaud said.

Different prospect-ranking sites have different opinions on Smith. Rivals ranked Smith the No. 28 running back in the nation, the highest rankings for Smith, while ESPN doesn’t even have him in their top-100.

More from Devils in Detail

Smith’s quickness will be a change of pace for ASU as their recent running game have inherited a reputation as more of a ground-and-pound attack than pure speed.

With this past season being a very underwhelming one for the Sun Devils, fans should be happy to see so many commitments coming from the Class of 2017.

If coach Graham has everything fall into place, then the 2018 season will be a good one for ASU football.

This upcoming season should be looked at as a transitional season with a new quarterback taking the reigns. Making sure that ASU’s quarterback of the future has the offense mastered is something that coach Graham should focus on this upcoming season.

The 2018 season will be the season to put it all together with such a promising recruiting class coming in.

Big and exciting things are on the horizon for ASU football, and Trelon Smith just added one more reason to be excited.
