ASU Softball: Weekend Recap and Thoughts

facebooktwitterreddit

The ASU Softball team wrapped up their season this past week unable to overcome Oregon State as they lost both games in Corvallis.

ASU originally was supposed to play three games spanning from Thursday to Saturday but Saturdays game was cancelled due to inclement weather and it was announced that it will not be rescheduled.

Quick Reaction:

ASU had an opportunity this weekend to end their season on a high-note as Oregon State had been struggling as of late and were within a game difference of ASU in the Pac-12 standings.

The moral of the story this season has been to improve on pitching, but that wasn’t the case this weekend as the pitching was strong but it was ASU’s hitting that couldn’t come through for them this time. Thursday ASU only lost to Oregon State 1-0 and on Friday they had a competitive 3-4 loss.

Player to watch:

Kelsey Kessler got the start on Thursday and pitched as well as you could ask a starting pitcher to pitch. In 6.2 innings, Kessler gave up only 4 hits, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts. But that great outing was soured as she also gave up the sole run of the night which ultimately gave Oregon State the win.

More from Devils in Detail

Kessler has been amazing for the Sun Devils this season. She has done more than what should have been required from her this season and she put the Sun  Devils in many winning situations but relief pitching and not having enough clutch hitting is what doomed the Sun Devils throughout the season.

Final Thoughts:

At some point you just have to take a step back, look at this team on paper, and shake your head because of how much potential and hype this team had going into the season. No one thought they were going to be the national champions come June, but no one could have foreseen a season as lack-luster as this one.
