Takeaway #2: ASU needs a dual-threat quarterback

Last season was a clear indication that Arizona State thrives when they are led by a dual-threat quarterback and they struggle when they are not. After providing magic for a few games in 2014, Mike Bercovici was given the starting job last season.

He was the complete opposite of the quarterback before him, Taylor Kelly. Bercovici stayed inside the pocket and threw the ball where as Kelly ran around, often outside of the pocket, and made things happen because of his feet.

Last season it was clear to see that the magic Bercovici had shown in 2014 was a fluke and in reality Bercovici was an average quarterback at best.

This upcoming season will be an interesting one for the Sun Devils at the quarterback position. The current favorite is unknown but most suspect that Manny Wilkins will get the starting job.

More from Devils in Detail

He is similar to Taylor Kelly as he has the ability to run as well as the ability to throw downfield. Even though Wilkins hasn’t thrown a pass in a game, he is often compared to Kelly when it comes to the running ability. Kelly also had a good arm to go along with his feet, Wilkins does not. He over-relies on his ability to run and doesn’t have trust in himself to throw the ball downfield yet.

That is something he is going to have to get over if he wants to be the starting quarterback come September.
