ASU Football Recruiting: Devils Lose a RB, Pick Up Another

Earlier today, ASU began National Signing Day with a pleasant surprise: the Letter of Intent from running back Jaason Lewis.  Lewis is a 4-star prospect from Virginia Beach, VA.  In fact, he was the Virginia High School Player of the Year.  At 6’4″, 246 pounds, Lewis has the size to play several different positions.  He’s being recruited as a running back, but time will tell where he actually lines up on the field.

That early signing from Lewis from Virginia may have affected the decision of three-star RB Paul Lucas.  Lucas is a local running back from Mountain Pointe and is rated as the #3 recruit in the state of Arizona.  He committed to ASU in late December.  Today, he flipped his commitment and signed with Oregon State.  The fact that Lewis signed early may have pushed Lucas to reconsider.  ASU right now, is stocked pretty well at running back, including two freshman that played last season. (Richard, Ballage)  Lucas may simply have been looking for a program where he could find less competition to get on the field.

Lucas is a burner, a small guy that can absolutely fly.  He could have helped this ASU team.  In signing Lewis from Virginia, ASU landed an excellent running back prospect.  Losing Lucas is more of another mental blow for ASU in that they once again let a local kid get away.

But a good Start for ASU.
