ASU Sun Devils on Draft Day
By Mike Slifer
In about an hour, the NBA draft will begin. It’s an exciting time for all teams and their fans. For ASU fans, they’ll be watching to see if any of their favorite Sun Devil players will be among the 62 players to get their name called.
Most experts believe that outgoing Sun Devil point guard Jahii Carson will be drafted in the late second round. The book on Carson is that he is an explosive athlete with the ball. He can break down defenses off the dribble and create scoring opportunities. These same experts predict that Carson will probably only be a role player that comes off the bench to be a spark plug with his energy.
Carson’s detractors first point to his size. At 5’10”, it’s hard not to see his height as a liability. It will be difficult for him to finish drives in the lane. It won’t be easy to get shots off either. And of course, his size is a big disadvantage on defense.
But you can never count out hunger. Jahii Carson wants to play badly. He wants to prove himself. Devils in Detail believes that whichever team drafts Carson will get a determined effort from him; an effort to improve, polish his game and become more versatile to contribute.
The latest mock draft is suggesting that Carson will go to the Miami Heat.
As for the other Sun Devil, Jordan Bachynski, the NBA draft experts also predict that he’ll be a late second round pick, most likely to the Toronto Raptors. Apparently, Toronto needs depth at Center.
For a big guy, Bachynski impresses with his agility and his soft touch. He won’t be a “scoring center” in the NBA. At least not right away. But he can be a defensive force and provide those good, tough minutes that every team is looking for. Bachynski’s work ethic, intelligence and high ceiling of potential make him a valuable commodity.
Devils in Detail believes the 7’2″ Bachynski will be an excellent pickup for a team in need of depth at center and a good teammate.
More to follow on the Draft as it unfolds.
