Two Sun Devils are National Champions in Track and Field.
NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Eugene, OR
Junior middle distance runner Shelby Houlihan won the outdoor title in the women’s 1500 meter run. The junior from Sioux City, Iowa won with a time of 4:18:10. It is the first title for ASU in this event. Houlihan overcame some early jostling in the slow-paced pack and broke free to finish strong despite a late push from one opponent.
Men’s high jumper, Bryan McBride won the men’s high jump by clearing 7 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches. The 6’3″ junior from nearby Sandra Day O’Connor High School had to battle poor weather to win the title. McBride cleared the winning height on his third and final attempt.
Also of note, the men’s 4×100 relay team and the men’s 4×400 relay teams qualified for the national finals.
The ASU men’s team finished 13th nationally.
This season’s results continue a long tradition of excellence in track and field for Arizona State University.
