Arizona State received word on Sunday it will play the Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-5) in the 2013 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif. Set for Dec. 30, the game will be played at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers, and televised by ESPN. The winner will receive a payout of $2,075,000.
ASU (10-3) missed an opportunity to play in it first Rose Bowl since 1997 when it lost to Stanford in Saturday night’s Pac-12 Championship Game.
The Sun Devils received the Holiday Bowl berth after the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio chose Oregon to represent the Pac-12 Conference.
Despite losing out on a chance to play for the roses in Pasadena, ASU will earn significant benefits from its Holiday Bowl appearance. The team will battle for its 11th victory of the 2013 season, having reached 11 wins only five other times in program history. The last time was in 1996. The bowl berth also brings extra practice time and the opportunity to play a high-profile game in recruitment-rich Southern California.
ASU has a 0-3 all-time Holiday Bowl record. Previous results include: an 18-17 loss to Arkansas in 1985, a 34-27 loss to Kansas State in 2002 and a 52-34 loss to Texas in 2007.
ASU is 1-0 all-time against the Red Raiders. Their most recent match-up, in 1999, resulted in a 31-13 home win for the Sun Devils. This year’s meeting will pit a Texas Tech offense that averages 392 passing yards per game against a Sun Devil defense that is among the nation’s best in interceptions, forced turnovers and sacks.
