facebooktwitterreddit

What: Annual pre-season football camp
When: Aug. 12-17, 2013, concluding with the annual scrimmage
Where: Camp Tontozona, located approx. 100 miles northeast of Phoenix on State Route 260 (about 17 miles east of Payson)

Additional Details:

Anticipation for Camp Tontozona is running at an all-time high among ASU fans. The Sun Devils are coming off an eight-win season, the first winning campaign in five years, and capped the regular season off by beating rival Arizona and then winning their first bowl game in seven years. Plus, ASU has been picked in the Pac-12 Conference’s 2013 pre-season media poll to finish second in the Pac-12 South Division behind UCLA.

A trip to Camp Tontozona is an annual ritual for the Sun Devil faithful. The facility is nestled in the cool pines of the Tonto National Forest, just under the famed Mogollon Rim in Central Arizona. The rim itself begins just east of the New Mexico border and stretches two-thirds of the way across Arizona; the area we refer to as the Rim includes Payson and its smaller neighbors, the communities of Pine, Strawberry, and Christopher Creek.

While decidedly not cosmopolitan — and with an entirely different ambiance than Arizona’s other weekend getaways — the Payson/Pine/Strawberry area is laid-back, picturesque, and chock-full of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Here are a few ideas for pre- or post-Camp T activities:

  • Drive, Bike, or Hike the Top of the Mogollon Rim
  • Go Camping in Rim Country
  • Go Fishing on One of the Many Lakes or Streams
  • Go Horseback Riding
  • Visit the Zane Grey Museum
  • Visit Tonto Natural Bridge
  • Visit Tonto Fish Hatchery
  • Golf on Payson Courses
  • Go Gambling at the Mazatzal Casino
  • Attend One of Payson’s Many Rodeos
  • Pick a Trail and Go Hiking
  • Enjoy the Natural Springs at Fossil Creek

See you at Camp T!
