Heading into the 2013 season, ASU has two senior cornerbacks in Osahon Irabor and Robert Nelson on its roster. The most recent recruiting class of 2013 only signed one high school corner in Will Earley. The Sun Devils will be looking to add some younger cornerbacks to its program in the Class of 2014.
#7 Tyler Whiley, DB, Scottsdale Chaparral
Tyler Whiley, a 6’0” 185 lbs high school wide receiver/defensive back out of Scottsdale Chaparral, has all the tools to become a team’s top playmaking cornerback. He is such a tremendous athlete that Whiley is a Division 1 prospect at wide receiver, cornerback, or safety. Physically, Whiley has great height and arm span along with a frame to handle more muscle and weight.
The Tyler Whiley list of accolades includes the following:
- Scout.com 4 star, #11 overall position ranking
- Rivals.com 4 star, #13 overall DB ranking
- Part of Rivals Underclassmen Challenge in Texas
- ESPN.com 4 star, ESPN150 member
- 247sports.com 4 star
Currently, Whiley has reported offers from Arizona State, Arizona, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Nebraska, and several other major colleges. This battle could come down to UCLA and Noel Mazzone versus both Arizona and Arizona State.
Defensive coordinator Paul Randolph and cornerbacks coach Joe Lorig would love to add a tall, local defensive back to build the future secondary around. Lock-down, big, athletic corners are necessary to keep an aggressive, blitzing defensive style.
