Football Recruiting: LB Viliami Latu Signs LOI With Arizona State
A product of Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) High School, the 6-2 230-pound Latu originally committed to Arizona State in October 2012. He visited ASU’s Tempe campus in January 2013.
Latu chose Todd Graham’s Sun Devils over Oregon State, Arizona and San Diego State. He had offers from a total of 13 schools.
According to Latu, he and brother Alani, also an ASU commit, are excited to be Sun Devils. The brothers entered the recruiting process hoping to land at a school where they could play together on the same defense. The opportunity to compete in the Pac-12 conference was another important aspect of their decision to sign with Arizona State.
The Latu brothers are cousins of former ASU defensive lineman Paul Unga, which led to reciprocal interest. They committed during a visit from ASU recruiting coordinator Joe Lorig. The brothers are considering taking a Mormon mission prior to entering school but have not yet made a final determination.
With its 62-26 defeat of the Navy Midshipmen in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, Arizona State closed last year’s football season on a successful note. Under the hand of first-year head coach Todd Graham, the Sun Devils achieved an 8-5 record, won their first bowl game since 2005, and most importantly, set the stage for further achievements in the coming years.
