Despite picking up a win against the No. 10 team in the nation, ASU softball stayed put at No. 23 for the third straight week.

For ASU softball, not moving up even a single spot has got to be disappointing. They competed well in all three games against Utah and they even took a game from them, so not moving into the No. 21 or No. 20 spot is a let down.

While this is a let down, this also might be the fire that Arizona State needs heading into this weekend. This weekend the Sun Devils will be down south in Tucson to face the No. 3 Wildcats. If ASU uses this to their advantage, they could be on the winning side of this weekend.

Realistically, Arizona State should have no issue becoming a top-20 team by the time the postseason starts if they finish strong. Playing in the Pac-12 has its advantages, and the strength of teams is one. If the Sun Devils can finish their in-conference season with a winning record, that will have a big impression on the seeding committee.

A strong finish is the key to everything for ASU. A strong weekend against Arizona followed up with a strong outing against UCLA should be enough to propel Arizona State into the top-20, which will put them on the committee’s radar.

The Sun Devils shouldn’t be focusing on their poll position, they should just be focusing on the on-field product. Success on the field will translate into a boost in the rankings. In the end, it will all work itself out. ASU will either be hosting a regional because they rightly deserve it, or they will be on the road because that is what they earned.

Just making the postseason would be a success for first-year ASU head coach, Trisha Ford, but anything more than that would prove just how good this team can be under her leadership.
