Former ASU baseball and MLB great, Barry Bonds, is set to be honored later this season by ASU and Adidas.

The current ASU baseball team will be wearing throwback jerseys against UNLV on Tuesday, March 28. The jersey, titled the Adidas Heritage Uniform, is representative of ASU’s jerseys during the Bonds era (1983-85).

During his time at ASU, Bonds hit 45 home runs and was a part of two College World Series teams. The team in 1983 finished in third and fourth in 1984. In 1999 Bonds was inducted into the ASU Sports Hall of Fame.

For both Bonds and ASU, this is a very cool opportunity. Arizona State is historically one of the best baseball schools in the nation and a big reason for that is what Bonds did during his time as a Sun Devil. It only helped put ASU on the map after Bonds followed up a great college career with an even better major league career.

Bonds will throw out the first pitch of Tuesday’s game, but the festivities won’t stop there. Expect there to be a full-on 80’s party at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

When speaking to Arizona State Athletics, Bonds was very grateful for the opportunity to be honored in such a big way.

“I am extremely humbled and proud that Sun Devil Baseball has chosen to debut a uniform that commemorates my time at Arizona State, as well as that of my teammates and coaches,” Bonds said. “I want to thank coach Tracy Smith and the entire team for this great honor. No matter what era you play in, when you put on that uniform, you truly are a Sun Devil for life and a representative of this great university.”

The current Sun Devil baseball team is sitting at 9-10 after being swept by Oregon State this past weekend, but maybe after seeing one of Arizona State’s all-time greats the team with have new motivation.
