Bobby Hurley Can’t Completely Escape the ‘Duke Floor Slap’

“If you ask non-Duke basketball fans why they dislike the Blue Devils so much, you’ll get a wide range of answers.

There’s been a stream of “unlikable” players like Christian Laettner, J.J. Redick and Grayson Allen.

There’s been the constant winning — five national championships, 12 Final Fours and a gaggle of ACC titles.

Oh, the floor slap would be mentioned as well.”

A nice little reminder that beloved coach Hurley did play for one of the most hated and envied basketball programs of all time. While most would enjoy the success that Duke has had, they may not enjoy the culture quite as much.

It is also interesting to see how little things, like the floor slap, turn into iconic gestures that is copied all the time because of its association with the Blue Devils and success.

Scouting Report, Utah Utes Women’s Basketball

courtesy of: Sam Ficarro

“Next up for head coach Charli Turner Thorne’s team is a trip to face the mountain schools. First, ASU will head to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Utes.

The Utes are sitting at 12-1 and 1-1 in Pac-12 play. The Utes have been one of the surprise stories in the country after a remarkable turnaround under head coach Lynne Roberts.

Utah went undefeated in non-conference and received votes in the AP Poll last week. The Utes went to southern California to face UCLA and USC and split the two games.”

ASU’s women’s team is very successful. Despite having a shaky non-conference for their standards, they are a ranked team and an opponent that very few teams enjoy facing. After splitting their first two games of the in-conference season, it is important for the team to sweep this weekend’s series against the mountain schools to remain one of the top teams in the Pac-12.

NASA Approves Mission That Includes ASU-Designed Thermal Emission Spectrometer

“NASA has approved a mission to explore asteroids that scientists — including Arizona State University researchers behind a key component — hope will reveal details about the earliest history of the solar system.

The Lucy mission will carry an ASU-designed and -developed thermal emission spectrometer, which will measure surface temperatures on each asteroid the spacecraft visits, said Philip Christensen of the university’s School of Earth and Space Exploration.”

Not a sports story by any means, but a very cool story relating to ASU that is worth mentioning. Arizona State has really become a school of innovation, being ranked No. 1 in the nation for innovation the past two years, and this story is the perfect example of how these innovative ideas are being put to use.
