Tyler Johnson Latest Hometown Star to Stay True to ASU

“With National Signing Day less than a month away, ASU already has secured verbal commitments from six in-state prospects, and their most recent pledge may be the most intriguing yet.

On Dec. 16, ASU received an early Christmas present when Tyler Johnson, a consensus 4-star prospect from Highland High School in Gilbert, announced his commitment to the Sun Devils. A priority target for the program, Johnson had been a frequent visitor to ASU in recent years and was well versed in what the program had to offer him.”

This is a great article that really offers a glimpse into why recruits choose Arizona State. With possibly his most highly criticized season happening this past year, head coach Todd Graham can use all the good publicity he can get. While this article does shine a positive light on the football program, it isn’t going to fix the defensive issues the team has faced over the past couple of seasons.

Desert Hockey Classic Recap

“Despite the luxury of a quick hour or so bus ride and a larger arena with more capacity for fan support, the Sun Devils (7-14-1) fell in overtime to Rhode Island’s Ivy league Brown, 9-8 (NCAA rules counted it as an 8-8 tie), and then lost to No. 18 St. Cloud State of Minnesota, 4-2.

Arizona State failed to capture its first-ever win in the tournament for the second year of its existence. In last season’s Desert Hockey Classic, ASU fell to both Yale and Connecticut in Gila River Arena.”

A disappointing finish for the Sun Devils. With momentum on their side, they were unable to capitalize in what was basically two home games for ASU. The hockey team has looked better in their second season as a DI program, which was expected, but they have looked like a team that could be a real force within the hockey landscape in another 3-5 years. The future looks very bright for ASU hockey.

Why The Cal Win Was Crucial

courtesy of: Sam Ficarro

“It was a crucial win for the Sun Devils given how deep the Pac-12 is. In today’s AP Poll, there are six ranked teams with Colorado on the cusp of rejoining the rankings. The Pac-12 has never been deeper, and it’s essential to win on your home court considering the competition level.”

The women’s team looks to be in a good spot after a solid victory over Cal. While they may not be ranked as highly as some would have liked, they currently sit at No. 19, they are on-pace to be another favorite to hoist the Pac-12 championship trophy come early March. The surprisingly strong play of an inexperienced backcourt, plus the presence of a very senior frontcourt, has made for a very dangerous team that no one is overlooking.
