After a great 2016, we here are Devils in Detail are trying to find ways to make 2017 even better for our readers! While we try to cover everything that happens with Arizona State sports, there are more voices out there than just ours. We wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t give our readers access to all those different voices. We present to you, the daily devil, a great way to stay on-top of everything ASU.

Women’s Basketball Hands Cal First Loss of Season

“It was an eventful Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena. Arizona State entered the game with an 0-1 Pac-12 record after they fell to Stanford 64-57. Arizona State was looking to avoid an 0-2 start in conference play, especially with the depth in the Pac-12.

The Sun Devils were up for the challenge, and led by the senior group of forwards Sophie Brunner and Kelsey Moos and center Quinn Dornstauder, ASU defeated Cal in double overtime 72-62 and handed the Golden Bears their first loss of the season.”

In a very deep Pac-12, it was important for the Sun Devils to win this game. A 2-0 in-conference record would have been deflating for the team, but a 1-1 record looks a lot more bearable. Realizing that the schedule doesn’t get any easier needs to happen sooner rather than later for these ladies.

“Coming off of an exhilarating victory against Stanford, the Sun Devils had built up some positive momentum. The backcourt tandem of Torian Graham and Tra Holder has provided massive scoring over the past few weeks and hoped to continue the trend. Unfortunately, the Sun Devils found themselves outmatched when faced with the size and spacing of the Golden Bears.”

A hard loss for the Sun Devils who picked up a great win against Stanford to start out their season. With the small-ball lineup and a majority of their points coming from the backcourt, this team will live and die by the three. When the ball is falling from behind the arc, like what happened in the Stanford game, they are looking good. When the ball is’t falling from behind the arc, like what happened in the Cal game, then things don’t look as promising.

ASU Baseball Manager Tracy Smith To Take Over Pitch Coaching Duties

courtesy of: AZCentral

“Arizona State baseball head coach Tracy Smith is taking over pitching coach duties, at least temporarily, going into his third season.

Smith decided after fall practice and the team’s trip to the Dominican Republic to replace Brandon Higelin, who was on Smith’s final staff at Indiana in 2014 and at ASU in 2015 and ’16.”

This could be a great move for Sun Devil baseball. After a season that was plagued with injuries and poor pitching, a change was needed. With Smith taking over as pitching coach, there will be no excuse for a poor pitching performance. The Sun Devils also have the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation coming in, which offers a nice boost to the whole team overall including the pitching depth. 2017 will be a big season for ASU, and this only adds to the excitement as the season approaches.
