ASU Basketball couldn’t shake off a bad shooting night and were outplayed in a 97-64 loss to Purdue in the Jimmy V Classic. The Sun Devils fell to 5-4 on the season.

Coming into tonight’s game, the Sun Devils needed to do two things to compete against a substantially larger Purdue team: Limit rebounds and close out shooters on the perimeter.

In a 33-point blowout loss at Madison Square Garden, ASU gave up 15 made threes and was outrebounded 44-31.  It was Arizona State’s second loss of 30+ points in its past three games.

Freshman Jethro Tshisumpa made his first collegiate start in place of guard Torian Graham as head coach Bobby Hurley attempted to match Purdue’s size in the paint. Tshisumpa was held scoreless but recorded two rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks in a season-high 15 minutes.

More from Devils in Detail

ASU did a good job of containing forward Caleb Swanigan as the sophomore fouled out with six points and 10 rebounds but the rest of the Boilermakers stepped up with their leading scorer limited. Center Isaac Haas led Purdue with 16 points and 7 rebounds while junior Vince Edwards chipped in 16 points on 4-5 shooting from deep.

Days after tying a program record for single-game made three-pointers with 18, the Sun Devils shot 4-26 from beyond the arc, unable to find any sort of rhythm in their offense.

Guard Kodi Justice had the most efficient night for ASU with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench but a majority of the team couldn’t get anything going against a long and athletic Purdue frontcourt.

Following the loss, ASU will have a few days off before traveling to California to play San Deigo State. The Sun Devils fall to 5-4 on the season, notably 1-4 away from Wells Fargo Arena.
