The Arizona State Sun Devil Men’s Ice Hockey team welcomed in the No. 17 Michigan Wolverines Friday evening for a one game match-up at Gila River Arena.

The Sun Devils (1-8-0) and the Wolverines (4-3-1) played competitive hockey, but the maize and blue would prevail with a final score of 4-1.

Both teams came out sizing each other up, but the players took some time getting their skates underneath them.

The Wolverines got on the board first just over nine minutes into the 1st period. Senior captain Nolan De Jong fired a slap shot from the high right slot over the right shoulder of Sun Devil goaltender Joey Daccord.

Arizona State responded just over six minutes later when a 2-on-1 opportunity developed between sophomore Joe Lappin and freshman Georgy Gorodetski. Lappin elected not to pass and beat Michigan goaltender Zach Nagelvoort short-side to tie the game, 1-1.

The Sun Devils had four Power Play opportunities in the 1st period but were not able to cash in on any of them. Arizona State would go a total of 0-7 on the Power Play for the entire game.

At the beginning of the second, the Sun Devils would get two early penalties. Michigan would eventually capitalize on the momentum.

Freshman Will Lockwood brought the puck into the slot and fired a shot that went off the crossbar and down. The puck bounced off the goal line on the ice and away from the net.

Initially, play continued, but after some hesitation, the goal light came on. The officials attempted to review the goal, but they could not check the replay on the ice.

Michigan was awarded the score to take a 2-1 lead just over six minutes into the 2nd Period.

Arizona State received another penalty three minutes later. Freshman Adam Winborg put a shot on net for the Wolverines beating Daccord through the legs on the Power Play.

The Wolverines took the 3-1 lead into the break before the 3rd Period. Shots favored the Sun Devils 26-25.

The Sun Devils had a 5-on-3 advantage toward the middle of the 3rd period. They were unable to get any solid chances toward a goal.

Will Lockwood scored his second goal of the night as the Sun Devils were still on the Power Play. The freshman made it look easy with a highlight-reel move.

Lockwood carried the puck all the way into the ASU defensive zone. He put a toe-drag deke on the defender and fired one past the right shoulder of Daccord.

Arizona State dropped their 5th straight game since their lone win against Air Force. The Sun Devils wrapped up the nine game stretch against ranked opponents with this Michigan game.

The Sun Devils will go on the road for their next four games. They will take on New Hampshire next Saturday and No. 5 ranked Boston College on Sunday.
