After a tough loss against Oregon State which happened to be the Beaver’s first win of conference play, the Sun Devils came into their game against Oregon at an all-time low.

Missing from the lineup for the game ,once again, was forward Jazmarie Mader, and midfielders Aly Moon and Lucy Lara.

It was evident from the get-go that these key offensive players were absent because there was no offense attack going for the Devils and the defensive line was being tested.

On a strong attack down the middle, Oregon midfielder Maryn Beutler took a low shot and scored against freshman keeper for the Devils Emma Malsey, putting the Ducks up 1-0 in the 5th minute.

Oregon was able to continuously drive through the Devils defense and spread them out wide to tire them out and make mistakes in the box. The lack of presence in the midfield damaged the Devils’ possession based style of play and left them running in circles, not doing much to advance into the attacking half of the field.

By the end of the first half, the Devils were able to clean up their game and put pressure on the Ducks defensive line. The closest chance the team had was Larisa Staub’s goal that was called offsides in the 13th minute.

More from Devils in Detail

Coming out of the half, the Devils were looking to put up a fight and make for an interesting game and possibly get on the board.

In the 47th minute of the game, Oregon’s Bayley Bruner was up one-on-one with Malsey and scored, bringing the Ducks up 2-0.

Soon to follow was a goal from Abby Morrow in the 49th minute of play from a deflection off of Malsey to extend the Ducks lead to 3-0.

In the 50th minute Malsey fouled an Oregon forward causing a penalty kick. Sofia Chambers took the shot for the Ducks and hit it on the ground to the bottom left corner and Malsey was just late stopping it which put another point on the board for Oregon, bringing them up 4-0 against ASU.

The Ducks were able to secure their lead against the Devils from these three goals in the first five minutes of the second half of play. Many things contributed to the quick turnaround on these goals, but it all comes down to the Devils team as a whole. The lack of communication and lethargic presence on the field left the Devils in no position to come back against Oregon.

Malsey got her starting position back today but made many errors that lead to the scoring of these goals from stepping off her line at the wrong times, to having a bad read and jump on the forwards she wasn’t able to defend her goal as well as the team might have hoped.

The Devils’ back line wasn’t much help as they became flustered having been spread out wide by the Ducks offense and weren’t able to stop through balls and attacks from the aggressive forwards.

Though the Devils were able to finish off the game with the same amount of shots taken as the Ducks, they weren’t able to take quality shots that could be put away for a goal. If the team wants to be able to start getting on the board they need begin taking more quality shots and getting them on frame rather than just hoping it winds up near the goal.
