Rapid Reaction

The Sun Devils started the season off with a 44-13 win. Here are a few quick takeaways from the game.

1. Manny Wilkins still has a few questions surrounding him

Wilkins did have a productive night but he also had head scratching moments. A constant thing throughout the night was Wilkins’ lack of downfield passing. Most of Wilkins’ passes were dump off passes or screens that relied more on the receiver picking up the yards with his feet rather than the receiver catching the ball downfield. This will be something that you have to believe will be addressed in the upcoming week of practice, and expect Wilkins to throw downfield a little more next week against Texas Tech.

2. ASU’s defense performed very well

Only allowing 13 points, regardless of the competition, is a good night defensively. Something that plagued ASU last season, broken tackles, didn’t seem to be a huge issue for the Sun Devils tonight. The defense also did a good job of getting 3rd down stops. NAU was 5 of 16 on 3rd down tonight. Overall, a good performance from the ASU defense.

3. N’keal Harry could be a breakout star for the Sun Devils this season.

Harry had a good night for his first career college game. He racked up 31 receiving yards, 34 rushing yards and scored a touchdown in his first game as a Sun Devil. Harry was definitely feeling the pressure coming into the night, as expectations were high for the top player in this past year’s recruiting class. He lived up to those expectations and gave the fans a flash of what he could do for the Sun Devils this upcoming season.
