Both Zane Gonzalez and Matt Haack have been named to preseason watch lists, increasing ASU Football’s total to five players that have been named to preseason watch lists.

Gonzalez has been named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award, while Matt Haack has been named to the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award.

The Lou Groza Award recognizes the best collegiate placekicker in the country, last season’s recipient was Ka’imi Fairbairn of UCLA.

The Ray Guy Award recognizes the best collegiate punter in the country, last season’s recipient was Tom Hackett of Utah.

More from Devils in Detail

For Gonzalez, this is his third straight year being named to the Lou Groza Award watch list, and this upcoming season provides him with the best opportunity to take home the award.

With 73 career field goals, he currently is 16 field goals away from breaking the FBS record for career field goals, and nine away from breaking the ASU football record for career field goals.

He also comes into this season as the league leader in points-per-game with 9.9, and field goals made-per-game with 1.87.

In perhaps his most impressive accomplishment, Gonzalez is only 114 points away from breaking the record by most career points by any player in collegiate history.

This is the season for Gonzalez to not only win the Lou Groza award, but to break a few records along with it.

For Haack, being named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list is a new experience as he had only been selected to the mid-season watch list in his previous two seasons.

Haack is very deserving of this recognition, being named to the preseason watch list, as he has consistently improved from season to season.

Last season Haack was a top-50 punter in punting average, and a top-five punter within the Pac-12.
