ASU Baseball: Sun Devils Take Series From the Bruins

This weekend, the ASU baseball team took 2 out of 3 games to win an important road series against UCLA.  The Sun Devils lost the first game on Friday night 7-3, but bounced back by getting an 8-5 win on Saturday and a 6-5 win on Sunday.

This was a huge trip for the ASU program.  It improves their standings in the PAC 12 conference and gives good momentum into this weekend’s home series against USC.  The two wins against the Bruins make it two consecutive winning road trips against solid PAC-12 opponents. (Oregon State/UCLA)

In the first game, the Devils took an early 2-0 lead and squandered an opportunity to blow the doors off by leaving 3 men on base.  They only scored one more run in the game and fell 7-3.

In the second game, Trever Allen had 3 hits and scored 2 runs.  Jake Peevyhouse and Dalton Dinatale each had two RBI’s in the solid 8-5 victory.

In game three on Sunday, the game went one extra inning, where RJ Ybarra came through with the game-winning pinch hit single to drive in Peevyhouse.  The go-ahead run was preserved by pitcher Ryan Burr in the bottom half of the tenth inning with a 1-2-3 inning.

Sun Devil fans are hoping that this momentum and winning mentality will continue into the weekend series with the Trojans.  Right now, ASU is a decent shape in the standings, but there is still a lot of baseball to play.  In general, winning two out of three against every opponent is a recipe for making the post-season.  Couple these two road series wins with the shellacking the Devils put on the Arizona Wildcats five days ago, and it’s easy to see that ASU is playing with confidence.  They’ll need it to put together 3 good games against USC.
